XYZLtd.isoneofthelargesthydro-generatingfacilitiesinIndia.Theorganisationhasbeeninthisbusinessforthelast10years.Itcoversabuildingareaof150000squaremetresandtheplantareaof50000squaremetres.Tomanagesuchlargeplantarea,theorganisationhasrealisedtheneedforhighmachinereliabilityandavailability.Forthis,XYZhasdecidedtoimplementacondition-basedmonitoring(CBM)program.Tomaketheprogramsuccessful,theorganisationformedaCBMteamfortheimplementationoftheprogram.Theteamacquiredknowledgeaboutthecurrentconditionofeachmachineand equipmentintheplantandidentifiedthefollowingloopholesintheexistingmaintenancesystem: v Presentmaintenanceincludedonlycorrectiveandscheduledactivities. v Inspectionswereconductedlessfrequently(onceina year). v Theprocedurefollowedfordeterminingfaultsonlycontainedvisualinspectionandgapmeasurement. v Measures tocontrolcontaminationin oilwerenotpresent. v There was no aggressivecontroloffailure. v Oilanalysiswasrestrictedtoidentifyinghazinesscausedbyhighlevelsofmoisture,oftenpastthedangerpoint,ordarkeningduetoadvancedstatesoflubricantoxidationand breakdown. WalmartisanAmericanmultinationalcorporationthatdealsintheretailbusinesswith large chains of discount stores and warehousestores. AccordingtotheForbesGlobal2000list,itisthe18thlargestpubliccorporationintheworld.Inthe1980s,whenthewholeworldwasfumblingwiththeideaofbarcoding,Walmartimplementeditinreality.ThecompanyinstalledRFIDreadersatseveralpointssuchasatthebackofthebuilding,atthereceivingdocks,nearthegarbagecompactors,andbetweenthebackroomandtheretailfloor. Thegoods,whichareshippedtothestoreswithRFIDtags,arerecordedonceattheirarrival.Withoutopeningthepackaging,theycometoknowwhatisinsideit,justbywavingthescannerattheboxes.Itisevenpossibletoknowthewhereaboutsofthegoods,whichreduceslossduringshipment.Whengoodsarebroughttothesalesfloor,thetagsarereadagain, and they are readfinallyin a box crusher.
Thesoftwarerecordsallthedetailsrelatedtotheitemssoldandthenumberofcasesbroughttothesalesfloor.Thus,ithelpsingeneratinginformationabouttheitemsthatexhaustintheshorterperiodfromtheshelves.Alistofitemsisgeneratedautomatically,whichneedtobetakenawayfromthebackroomtorestockthestoreshelves.WalmarthasdevelopedahandheldRFIDreadertoreducetheamountoftimespent at the backroom. |

AretaillinkextranethasalsobeenestablishedwithallthesuppliersofWalmarttosharedatafromallRFIDreadpoints,sothatwithin30minutes,supplierscometoknow about the movement and thelocation of theirgoods.
Walmartreliesonthistechnologyformanaginginventorymoreeffectively,reducingerrorsatthetimeofdataentryandloweringhumanlabourcostatthedistributioncentre.
RFIDhelpsWalmart in thefollowing ways:
- Conductingreceipt and shipment of goods faster
- Trackingmovement of inventoryeffectively
- Saving the shopper’s time
- Predicting the demand ofa product
- Avoiding an out-of-stock situation
- Boosting sales
- Makingtheavailabilityoftherightproductattherighttimeattherightplaceor store
A few limitations of RFID areas follows:
- Sometimes the tags do not
- Accurate reading of rates on some itemscan
- Reading through liquid or
- There is an increase in
InspiteofallthebenefitsofRFID,thecustomersofWalmartfearthepossibilityofviolatingtheirprivacy;however,WalmarttriesthatRFIDtagsdonotcollectanyadditional data about customers.
