MetalsisaleadingautomotivepartmanufacturingorganisationbasedoutofManesar.Itdealsinmanufacturingofautomotivespare partsandsuppliesthesepartstoleadingautomotiveorganisationsinIndia.ThereisadedicatedHR/IRdepartmentthattakescareofallemployeeissuesincludingsafetyissues.Thenumberofaccidentsatthework-placeofK.P.Metalsshowedaconsiderableincreaseinlast3months.Asaresulttherehasbeenanincreasenotonlyinthecostbutalsointhelegalsuitsagainsttheorganisationandalso.Thisbaffledmanagement.hireda safetyconsultanttocontaintheincreasingnumberofaccidents.Thesafetyconsultantconductedorganisationwidestudyofthesafetypolicy,typesofpastaccidentsandalsointerviewedsomeoftheemployees to understandtheir perspectiveonthe safety-policy. Aftercollatingthedata,theconsultantfoundthatthesafetypolicywasdraftedinastandardformatandwasnotinaccordancewiththenatureofjobtheemployeesweredoing.Thesafetypolicyclearlymentionedthatthewetfloorshouldhaveasignageboardwith“Wetfloor,Mindyoursteps”clearlymentionedonit.Therewasnosuchsignageboardintheworkfloor.Thesafetypolicyalsoclearlymentionedthatnoworkershouldbeallowedtoentertheworkplacewithoutthehelmeteveniftheworkerisnotworkingonthemachine.Thereweremanyworkerswhowereworkingwithouthelmetsondangerousmachines.ThesafetyconsultantwithhelpofHR/IRdepartment,projectmanagers,inputsfromtheemployeesdraftedanewcustomisedsafetypolicyanduseddifferentinside-marketingtoolstocommunicatethesameacrossorganisation.Thenewsafetypolicycategoricallymentionedtherewardsandpunishmentsfornotabidingbythesafetynorms.Italsomadethesupervisorsresponsibleforanynonadherencetothesafetynormsbyworkers.Therewasasubsequentdecreaseinthenumberofaccidentsas soon as thenewsafetypolicywasintroduced.
